From Tudor to Stuart

Elizabeth I of England died early in the morning of 24 March, 1603. Eight hours later, James VI of Scotland was proclaimed King of England, and the Tudors had thus been replaced by the Stuarts as monarchs of England.

The picture shows King James in 1606 (so not too far after he inherited the English throne).

James inherited the English crown as a descendant of Henry VII on both his mother's and father's side. His mother Mary, Queen of Scots, was the daughter of James V, who in turn was the son of Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII (and sister to Henry VIII). His father, Lord Darnley, was the son of Lady Margaret Douglas, daughter of Margaret Tudor in her second marriage.
